Amanda’s bathroom makeover is a clear reminder that paint can do more than refresh walls — it can revive an aging wood vanity and redefine the whole space. Thoughtful details like patterned drawer liners add personality and polish, turning a tired room into something welcoming and stylish without a big budget. Below, Amanda shares the story of their quick, satisfying renovation.
I just wanted to share the before and after we just completed in Brian’s bathroom. You guys have been very inspirational and have become quite the household name — “Brian, you should see over on YHL, they have such and such in their house and it looks awesome!” or “You should see what they just did over at YHL — we could do that!” So, thank YOU for opening your home to us and the many, many others to share your thoughts, ideas, and successful projects.
I know that I specifically thought about what I loved so much about your house when we started on this project. The cool colors, the natural elements introduced through decor, and all of the bright white really informed our choices. I also admire how you raised your shower curtain to 95 inches to make the ceiling feel taller, and that’s a small upgrade we plan to tackle soon. Thanks for helping to empower and inspire us to take on a space that wasn’t great and turn it into something we’re really proud of. We completed the update on a tight budget and in a short time — I’d estimate under 20 total hours. Thanks again — keep posting because I’ll definitely keep reading! — Amanda
Here was the bland builder-grade “before” shot: a common starting point for many homeowners. Neutral finishes, stock fixtures, and an unremarkable vanity left the room feeling functional but uninspired. These kinds of bathrooms are ideal candidates for simple updates that deliver big visual returns.
And here is the chic, classic “after,” achieved through paint, new hardware, and a few well-chosen accents — all completed with Amanda and Brian’s own hands:
This makeover illustrates a few reliable design lessons. First, paint is the most cost-effective way to change the character of a room. A fresh coat on the vanity and walls instantly modernizes the space and creates contrast or cohesion depending on the colors chosen. Second, replacing or refinishing hardware—drawer pulls, faucets, and light fixtures—can elevate a dated bathroom without a full remodel. Third, small decorative touches like patterned shelf liners, coordinated towels, or a new mirror provide finishing details that make the space feel intentional and complete.
In this project, the painted vanity anchors the room with a rich, contemporary tone that pairs beautifully with crisp white trim and fixtures. The shelf liners add a playful yet refined pattern, bringing texture and interest every time a drawer opens. Together, these choices create a look that feels custom and thoughtfully designed, even though the changes were affordable and straightforward.
Another advantage of this type of update is speed. Because the work focused on surface changes rather than plumbing or structural alterations, the couple was able to finish the project quickly. That makes this approach ideal for renters (with permission), busy homeowners, or anyone who wants a noticeable improvement without weeks of disruption.
Isn’t it a great reminder that paint and a few accessories are often all you need to transform a room? (And of course, don’t paint the dog.) We love the fresh, chocolate-colored vanity contrasted with white accents and the charming patterned liners that feel both modern and cozy. Amanda’s bathroom shows how accessible good design can be when you prioritize color, hardware, and small decorative details.
What do you think of Amanda’s update? It’s a practical, stylish example of how smart, budget-conscious choices can give an ordinary bathroom a tasteful, lasting makeover. Thanks to Amanda and Brian for sharing their project — it’s the kind of inspiration that encourages others to try a simple, high-impact refresh in their own homes.
