Using a Paint Pen on Drinking Glasses: Step-by-Step Guide

[ad_1]

These tumblers are downright delightful. Small glass cups can serve many purposes: charming votive candle holders, casual drinking glasses, or festive candy vessels arranged together on a coffee table. I’ve been curious about glass paint—the kind applied from a pen and baked on in the oven—so I decided to turn that curiosity into a simple DIY holiday gift. Of course, these projects can surprise you, but this one turned out well.

I originally intended to hunt for inexpensive thrift-store glassware, but when I found a matched set of four tumblers at Target for $2.50 (about 65 cents per glass), I grabbed them. I paired the set with a glass paint pen—Vitrea 160 in a deep green shade—picked up at Michael’s for only a few dollars. The total cost for four decorated tumblers came to roughly $5.50, which makes them an affordable, handmade present.

For the decoration, I followed the pen’s instructions and freehanded simple, seasonal motifs on the outside of each glass. One cup features feathery spruce trees, another displays pine-needle accents, and the remaining two are finished with wavy lines and clean stripes. After painting, I let the designs air-dry for 24 hours, as recommended by the product directions. Then I baked the glasses in the oven for 40 minutes at 325°F. (Baking times and temperatures can vary by product, so always follow the guidance on your paint pen.) We avoided preheating the oven and allowed the glasses to cool slowly inside after the timer finished, which seemed to prevent any thermal shock or cracking—sudden temperature changes are the main risk for glass damage.

The finished result is understated and elegant: festive without being over the top. Choosing a subtle, season-appropriate color and avoiding kitschy imagery—such as brightly colored snowmen or Santa illustrations—keeps these tumblers versatile enough to fit comfortably into many homes. That said, if you know someone who loves whimsical designs, you can absolutely go that route; personalization is an easy way to tailor the gift to the recipient’s taste.

Photographing glass is notoriously tricky because of reflections and transparency, but in person the tumblers look charming and surprisingly polished. They work well filled with holiday candy, grouped on a table, or paired with small votive candles on a mantel. They can also serve warm cider during a holiday gathering: once the paint is baked on, the ink is set and the glasses can be used normally. The paint I used is rated to be dishwasher-safe after baking, which makes these both pretty and practical.

Given the low material cost and the ability to customize each glass—initials, names, simple icons like hearts or horseshoes—this project makes an ideal budget-friendly gift. You can create sets that reflect a family’s style or coordinate with existing décor while still keeping the production simple and fast.

If you’ve tried glass painting, you know it’s a satisfying craft that yields tangible, useful results. If you haven’t, this project is a friendly place to start: minimal supplies, straightforward technique, and a high reward for little investment.
