We Bought a New DSLR – First Impressions and Sample Photos

[ad_1]

If you noticed a difference in our recent photos and videos, you were right: we bought a new camera. We weren’t sponsored or given one—we purchased it ourselves to improve our blog and to make photographing everyday life a little easier.

We upgraded to a Nikon D3200, the next step up from our old D3000. After more than two and a half years of heavy use, our previous DSLR finally gave out. The short version: I set the camera down on a 2×10 while cutting stair stringers for the deck, and the vibrations slowly moved the board until the camera slid off and hit the concrete. It was a classic klutz move and not one of my proudest moments.

That old camera had been through a lot. Considering we shoot roughly 300 photos a week—documenting projects, rooms, family moments, and the occasional disaster—that adds up to tens of thousands of images. Over time it survived paint splatters, dust, dirt, bumps, and the odd drop. But this particular fall damaged its autofocus. After that, we were limited to manual focus, which seriously hindered our ability to snap quick, candid shots of Clara and Burger or capture projects in progress.

We contacted our local camera shop and learned the repair might be possible, with parts and labor estimated around $150. The catch: Nikon would need to service it, and the repair timeline was six to eight weeks. We knew we couldn’t keep the blog running for that long without a reliable camera, so we considered our options. Renting a DSLR for two months would have cost more than buying a replacement. Buying a cheap point-and-shoot just to get by felt like throwing money away when we could invest in an upgrade that would last.

Ultimately we bought the D3200. We stayed with Nikon because our existing lenses—like the 50mm we purchased last summer—would still be compatible. The D3200 offered clear improvements we wanted: better low-light performance, improved auto white balance, and HD video capability. Those features translated into less time spent white balancing, fewer dim or grainy photos, and higher-quality videos for the blog and family moments. The price was higher than our original camera, but we treated it as a business and family expense that would pay dividends in time saved and image quality.

One of the most noticeable changes is video quality. Where we once relied on a basic flip-style camcorder for quick clips, the D3200 records in HD and produces much sharper, more cinematic-looking footage. The combination of improved low-light sensitivity and a better sensor also means we’re not scrambling to tweak settings every time the light changes. That’s especially helpful when documenting projects or capturing spontaneous family moments.

We still plan to have the old camera repaired and kept as a backup. Having a second DSLR on hand will prevent total disruption if something ever happens to the new one. It’s a sensible safety net for a blog that relies heavily on fresh images and frequent updates.

Overall, the new camera has been a solid upgrade. It reduces the time we spend fixing white balance and low-light issues, improves our wider-angle video capabilities, and gives us better quality images for the blog and everyday family photos. As frustrating as it was to break the old camera, the result is a tool that helps us create better content more efficiently. And yes, having a reliable camera makes documenting projects and capturing moments with Clara and Burger much more enjoyable.

On a different note, Sherry wants to chat about the finale of Bachelor Pad. If you watched it, what did you think? I wish I had recorded her reaction—it was priceless.
