What Your Home Should Look Like at 30

[ad_1]

Booyah — these are the show notes for Episode #7 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. In this episode we explore whether there’s a particular age when a home starts to feel more “grown-up.” We compare advice from three well-known design sources about what should (and shouldn’t) be in your home by the time you turn 30. We also share favorite housewarming gift ideas, quick tips for hanging things on the wall, and a look at the real estate features most commonly mentioned in listings around the country.

You can listen to the episode on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio, or find it in your favorite podcast app. Use this page as a companion to check links, photos, and sources we mention on the show.

Housekeeping

  • We recently appeared on The Chris Loves Julia Podcast with Preston Pugmire — listen to episode #9 to hear us discuss budgeting for projects and how we decide what to DIY versus what to hire out.
  • Check our Events Page for details on upcoming speaking appearances in Atlanta, New York City, and Greenville, SC. That page includes dates, times, and locations for each stop; we’d love to see you at an event.

What’s New

  • The custom address stamper featured on the show came from Three Designing Women. If their stock is limited, you may find similar options at retailers like Paper Source or Amazon.
  • For a practical housewarming gift, consider the Handy Paint Cup and a short-handled paint brush — both are small, useful tools that any DIYer will appreciate.
  • We also mentioned a craft post about turning race medals into Christmas ornaments — a fun way to display running accomplishments or other event medals.

60-Second DIY Tip

  • For hanging wooden frames and heavier items, we recommend using ReadyScrew D-rings. For lighter pieces, sawtooth hangers glued in place with a reliable adhesive work well. Keeping a few of these small hardware items and a strong glue in your tool drawer makes quick hanging jobs fast and easy.

What’s Not

  • We discussed an infographic from Zillow that highlights the most popular listing amenities by state. It’s an interesting look at what buyers in different regions are calling out as desirable features when selling a home.
  • There’s also a quiz version of that Zillow piece if you want to test your knowledge before revealing the top amenities.

Main Segment

  • Here are the design articles we referenced about what a home should — or shouldn’t — include by age 30:

We’re Digging

  • Canvas drop cloths make great reusable project covers and can double as casual tablecloths or fabric for simple sewing projects.
  • If you like inlay furniture and decor, here are a few pieces we’ve been admiring: a 3-drawer inlay dresser, inlay mirrors in various shapes and sizes, and bone inlay floor mirrors. These pieces add tactile interest and visual texture to a room without overwhelming it.

Psst — looking for something we featured in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to check? Here’s a master list of everything we’ve recommended or “dug” across past episodes.
