When Is a Dollhouse Collection Too Big?

[ad_1]

If you think our podcast has already covered this topic, wait until you hear what happened recently. The universe put Sherry’s dollhouse obsession to the test, and whether she passed or failed depends on who you ask. We also reveal a funny Ikea mystery—an item they were selling in bulk only in the U.S.—and share listener stories about how small space makeovers can change behavior in surprising ways. Plus: lessons learned from a one-color wardrobe challenge and a candid conversation about textured walls. Buckle up.

What’s New

  • Below is a “before” photo of a dollhouse a friend recently offered us, even though we already had more than our fair share of dollhouses over the holidays. If you want the backstory, we discussed earlier dollhouse finds in Episode #124 and the little “Sweet Shop” in Episode #130.

  • Does it remind you of a certain home we know and love? Especially now that our brick is painted white.

  • Sherry and our daughter have already had a lot of fun fixing it up. Expect a follow-up post detailing the tiny rooms and accessories soon. In the meantime, we previously shared how they transformed our son’s dollhouse.

Updates

  • We first mentioned the Wheel of Goon / Goon of Fortune idea in Episode #133 while exploring design norms from around the world. If you’re curious to see it in action, there are videos online demonstrating the concept.
  • Listener Jo shared some fascinating articles about Ikea: how they quietly tweak product designs for different countries and how many catalog images are now computer generated. Both pieces explain why some Ikea items vary by region.
  • We also discussed the book Joyful in Episode #130. Sherry’s minimal, mostly-black wardrobe and closet tour appeared in a dedicated post and in Episode #115, where she also mentioned her simple face-care routine.

  • We’ve talked about using constraints to our advantage: Episode #97 covers lessons from a “No Spend Month,” and Episode #131 explores what we learned by setting boundaries around TV watching. Episode #132 contains our lively debate about shoes on or off in the house; since that recording we collected nearly 10,000 survey responses about the topic.
  • Highlights from the survey show a notable difference between Americans and non-Americans: a far larger share of non-Americans reported a strict shoes-off policy in the home, while more Americans tended to say they “don’t really care.”

Can We Just Talk About Textured Walls?

Smooth wall in a bonus room
  • The photo above, taken in our bonus room, is a good example of the smooth walls we’ve had in every house we’ve owned. We’ve literally never lived with textured walls or ceilings.
  • In contrast, textured walls and ceilings are more common in certain regions and in homes built during particular eras. It’s one of those design details that immediately signals a place and a period.
  • We invited listeners to share their opinions about texture and how it affects a room’s feel. The range of responses was fascinating, from strong preferences for smooth finishes to defenders of classic texture.

We’re Digging

  • One book we loved thanks to your recommendations is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It’s a compelling read that sparked meaningful conversations in our house and led us to watch the HBO film adaptation.
  • We’ve also been enjoying board games with the kids. The version of Ticket to Ride we play is the standard American edition, but there are many other versions—Ticket to Ride Europe, Ticket to Ride New York, and kid-friendly editions like Ticket to Ride: First Journey.

  • Other games our kids (ages 4 and 8) enjoy include Happy Salmon, Clue Jr., The Game of Life Jr., and Tenzi—quick, easy, and great for family game night.

If you’re trying to find a topic we covered in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to open, we keep a master list of everything we’ve dug into on the podcast. We also maintain a Book Club page that lists every book recommendation we’ve made.

Finally, a thank-you to Rothy’s for sponsoring this episode. They made it easy to try a pair we loved, and we appreciate their support of the show.
