White Hot: How to Master All White Style

[ad_1]

We’ve developed a running hypothesis: roughly 75% of the items we bring into our home end up being white. To test that idea, here are some of our recent favorite purchases and finds. First up is one of the sweetest discoveries—a ceramic companion for the concrete greyhound that John gave me for Valentine’s Day.

We found this jumbo ceramic pooch at Home Goods for just $29, which felt like a serious score compared with similar porcelain greyhound statues sold at much higher prices. Now the new ceramic dog keeps watch in the sunroom while his concrete older brother presides over the living room—simple, charming, and entirely on-theme with our mostly-white aesthetic.

While carrying our new four-legged friend through the store, another small treasure practically jumped into my hands: a delicate ceramic votive holder. I’d seen the exact same style in a boutique weeks earlier marked at about sixteen dollars, but I passed it up. I’m glad I waited—this version rang up at only $4.95. It’s petite, elegant, and adds just the right quiet glow when lit.

Another recent favorite is a birthday gift from my good friend Cat: a set of glass canisters that likely came from West Elm. These vessels are versatile—perfect for bath soaps, snacks, or pantry staples. Of course, we filled them with classic white kitchen essentials: flour, sugar, and salt. They sit neatly on the counter and make the ordinary items feel a little more special and organized.

We’ve also been slowly expanding the wall of frames in our third bedroom, and it’s evolving into a crisp, mostly white display. Recently we hung a priceless birthday silhouette of Burger, plus a black-and-white sketch of our house (top right) and a playful computer illustration of Burger that my crafty friend Heather drew on my Facebook wall (top left). The mix of framed pieces, mostly in white or monochrome, gives the space a calm and collected look while showcasing personal mementos.

All together, these small additions reinforce our belief that white tends to dominate what we bring home. It’s not just a color choice—it’s a way to keep rooms feeling bright, cohesive, and versatile. White pieces are easy to layer, they reflect light, and they make both vintage and modern items play nicely together.

That said, we do allow exceptions. Lately we’ve been eyeing a lively blue rug at Pottery Barn that would add a bold touch to our mostly neutral palette. Mixing in a few colorful accents keeps the rooms from feeling too uniform and lets personality peek through. For now, though, white remains our dependable base: practical, pretty, and endlessly adaptable.
